Russian Gov’t Agencies Banned From Using Foreign Geospatial Systems

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law prohibiting government agencies and a number of organizations from using foreign geospatial systems, technologies, and tools, local media reported on Saturday. According to RIA Novosti, the ban will apply to state corporations, public companies, and natural monopolies. The ban will also affect business entities in the authorized capital of which the share of participation of the Russian state exceeds 50 percent. Geospatial systems, technologies and tools used by government agencies must comply with the requirements of the federal body authorized by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The Russian government has said that dependence on foreign technologies poses threats to national security. The law comes into force on April 1, 2024.
