Responsible recycling in Allegheny County just got easier. County officials this week launched the Recycling Drop-Off Finder, an online database and map that identifies drop-off locations, including places to take hard-to-recycle items. The site, a collaboration between county health, sustainability and information technology departments, is now live. The tool will also be helpful for residents who live within the 14 municipalities that do not have access to curbside recycling pickup. Curbside pickup information is not included in the database. The Allegheny County Health Department will still provide recycling information in its online directory, but will edit the document to prevent duplication.
“Our overall hope is we will see better recycling practices and less issues at the curb,” says Brittany Prischak, deputy director of Allegheny County’s Department of Sustainability. She says the county sought a summer intern with Geographic Information Systems experience to collaborate with county mapping experts and recycling coordinators to create the user-friendly site. Prischak adds the map feature was an important part of the process because the county wanted to allow users to easily find sites that are closest to their homes.

The map can also be zoomed in to filter options by location. The database will be reviewed and updated on a regular basis. Users may also submit feedback and suggestions for additions and edits.
